» AAUCM Point of Care Dispensing

Physician dispensing, a time-honored procedure for improving patient compliance and satisfaction, is especially well suited to urgent care. It can also provide significant revenue, depending on which dispensing company is used.

Those bidding for Academy endorsement were Allscripts, DSI, DRx, PDRx , QCP and a few others. DSI won for pricing and for a comprehensive but easy-to-use, web-based system (broadband required) that features bar-code dispensing and automated inventory control. The system provides drug interaction alerts and useful reports, prints patient education leaflets in English and Spanish, and adheres to all labeling and documentation requirements. A manual dispensing system is also available from DSI.

As a revenue center, dispensing is notable for workman's comp patients and for the uninsured. Reasonable returns are also available when dispensing generics to the insured population (when the dispensing price is set near the co-pay amount of $10/$15, the “price neutral” point for patients).

DSI maintains a state-of-the- art facility and offers, on average, best available pricing. The company’s AWP policy is well judged to provide good returns without excesses. Both brand and generics are available.

Upon request, DSI provides projections for revenue that might be expected at a given clinic. Members now dispensing through others may benefit by requesting a DSI revenue projection.

Academy members receive special pricing and valuable promotions on a variety of DSI programs.

Physician dispensing is not available in NY, NJ, TX, WY and UT.
